Neue Welt, Zugspitze

What a great day out with friend Christoph skiing on the Zugspitze. Garmisch received more snow than we actually thought. So of course we both came to the same sort of idea - we had to do something!
I called Christoph and he asked me what I was doing the following day? Skiing of course I said. Great we are going somewhere special he said...

oh it's down there

That somewhere special happened to be the Neue Welt off piste run. For those not from this "hood", that means nearly 2000m of vertical drop, a bit of skiing to 45 degrees, a couple rappels...well you get the idea. A pretty decent day out in the mountains.

The snow was good to brilliant from top to bottom which must be pretty rare. That just made our day. Of course it wouldn't be a day here in this part of the world without the traditional beer (or two) following the run.

The big dump

Well, the new winter season has finally kicked off and in a BIG way! It is strange coming from climbing in the sun on the med to finding yourself waist deep in snow all within one week's time.
It all got started last week with the kickoff of the Powderchase 2011-12 programs.

It starting to look a lot like winter...
The week started off with loads of snow and then it snowed some more and kept right on going until I left early this week.

In fact so much snow fell that we had trouble finding lifts open. Most of the area was blanketed in meters of snow and under a level 5 avalanche risk.
Needless to say things were a bit sketchy. After a bit of searching we did manage to sort out some great tree skiing in Courmayeur

and also in Le Tour on limited lift openings. Thanks to the folks at powderchase for a great time!

Monday it was both sad and hard to leave friends behind but other plans had been made, so it was down the long road home we go.
What I missed on Monday - merci les gars!

All said it was a great first trip back in Chamonix and I'm already looking forward to the next one in just a couple of weeks time.

Until the next time,
Ciao
